چکیده

of such a degree of hydrocephalus that there seems to be scarcely aiy brain substance left. In many cases of tuberculous meningitis streptomycin seems to maintain the condition of the patient when treatment was commenced, but little subsequent improvement is seen. Such experiences support the case for the inclusion of some adjuvant antibacterial agent with the streptomycin, in the hope that a synergistic action such as is seen with sulphonamide and penicillin might be found. Finally, it must be realized that the streptomycin treatment of tuberculous meningitis cannot be lightly undertaken. Apart from full laboratory facilities for controlling the clinical pathology of a case much extra nursing is required, continuous medical supervision is necessary, and from the patient's point of view there will be a course of intramuscular injections lasting for six months or more, apart from intrathecal and general supporting treatment. Only the fullest and continuing co-operation of everybody concerned can give streptomycin treatment the fair trial it deserves, and even in the most successful cases with apparent cure, prolonged subsequent observation is necessary owing to the possibility of relapse.

مقایسه غلظت آدنوزین‌دآمیناز مایع مغزی‌نخاعی در بیماران مننژیت سلی و غیر سلی

Background and Aim: Diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis is difficult because of its non-specific clinical presentations which may be confused with other disorders of central nervous system. The initiation of anti-TB medication can often be delayed because of lack of available laboratory tests. This study was aimed at evaluating the adenosine deaminase (ADA) concentration in differentiating tube...

A diagnostic rule for tuberculous meningitis.

Diagnostic confusion often exists between tuberculous meningitis and other meningoencephalitides. Newer diagnostic tests are unlikely to be available in many countries for some time. This study examines which clinical features and simple laboratory tests can differentiate tuberculous meningitis from other infections. Two hundred and thirty two children (110 tuberculous meningitis, 94 non-tuberc...

Observations on the bromide partition test in the diagnosis of non-purulent meningitis.

In its earliest stages when treatment will produce the most favourable results, tuberculous meningitis may be difficult to diagnose clinically, since other infective non-bacterial conditions of the central nervous system may present a similar clinical picture at their onset. Since the bromide partition test and its use in the diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis were described (Taylor, Smith and...

EVALUATION OF DIRECT MICROSCOPY, CULTURE, AND POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF TUBERCULOUS MENINGITIS

In view of the importance of early diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis (TBM), the efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), one of the most reliable and sensitive DNA-based assays, was compared with conventional methods (acid-fast microscopy and culture) for the detection of M. tuberculosis in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens from patients suspected of TBM. Of the 29 CSF specim...

A review of tuberculous meningitis at Auckland City Hospital, New Zealand.

The clinical features, investigations, treatment and outcome were studied in 104 patients with definite or probable tuberculous meningitis. The diagnosis of definite tuberculous meningitis required the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from cultures, or a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay for M. tuberculosis. In probable tuberculous meningitis, cultures and the PCR assay were ne...
